Invitation til seminarrække om Consumerism and Risk Society

Food for Thought: Consumerism, Children and Risk Society

A series of lectures by Professor Steve Kline, Simon Fraser University, Vancouver

In a series of lectures based on his forthcoming book Fast Food, Sluggish Kids (Palgrave) Prof. Stephen Kline sets out to reposition the debates about marketing to kids within the context of a risk society.

The departure for these lectures is the growing concern about the rise of child obesity rates and the multiple public and policy debates taking place about its causes and costs. This health issue is unpacked from various communication perspectives which are explored through a series of empirical studies which examine the various ways that children’s consumption patterns and lifestyle choices are culturally embedded in the mediated social communication of the global market.

British documentary futures: formatting the real
This lecture/presentation take a critical look at the current state
of factual/documentary TV programming in the UK and consider possible
future developments. Central issues will include the following: What
impact are changes in the ecology of broadcasting having on the form,
style and content of factual/documentary programmes? What role has
‘generic hybridization’ played in these developments? How much longer
can the Reality TV wave continue?

Richard Kilborn is senior lecturer in the Department of Film and
Media Studies at the University of Stirling. Major book publications
include: Television Soaps (1992), Confronting Reality (1997) and
Staging the Real ( 2003). He also writes on a regular basis for DOX
(International Documentary Magazine)
